The records show that Meridian Lodge #33 was founded September 25, 1901 under a charter issued by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliated of the Jurisdiction of Indiana. The Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Indiana was founded in 1856.

Brother Andrew Fry served in the East, Brother William Reed served in the West and Brother Robert Frazier served in the South when the lodge first opened under its new at charter. Early records show the lodge holding its meetings at 901 California Street initially in what was may have been Worshipful Master Fry’s own home. The lodge later moved to 351 Indiana Avenue before joining the other Central District lodges at 653 North West Street in 1958. Seeking its own identity the lodge later moved to a building leased from 1st Baptist Church of North Indianapolis located at 904 Udell. Taking another bold step to be visible in the community and under the Leadership of then Worshipful Master Marshall A. Taylor and the extraordinary support of the craft, especially 6 Brothers and Past Masters, the lodge purchased the present Lodge Hall at 2455 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street in 1986. While at times in the past we have had over 200 members, we presently have 151 members who reside all over Indianapolis. Our lodge size has settled in around that number for the last few decades.

We are primarily a fraternal organization that has in its tenets taking in good men and making better men. In addition to regular fraternal and family responsibilities this lodge has always tried to make a point of being a good citizen of the community to which we belong. In the past we have regularly contributed to our local community by:

Several thousands of dollars in scholarships given out each year to needy         students.

Hosting an annual Easter egg hunt at a nearby park open to all in the community

Annually opening our lodge hall on Thanksgiving Day to feed the needy and hungry.

A back-to-school party for neighborhood children.

Annually giving away food baskets with a whole turkey in each to needy families            at Thanksgiving.

Annually giving away food baskets with a ham at Christmas to needy families.

Taking up collections from members to contribute  to neighborhood families put out by fire.

And many other similar activities.
